NEW DELHI: Recent agriculture reforms will improve market access and increase income opportunities for farmers, industry body CII said in a statement on Tuesday.

“The reforms will have a transformational impact on the agri sector by enhancing productivity, modernising infrastructure, enabling aggregation at scale and improving market access,” ITC chairman Sanjiv Puri said. Puri, who is also chairman of the CII National Council on Agriculture, said the policy announcements will enable ITC to further its engagement with farmers through its e-choupal ecosystem.

The reforms are focused on the input side, introducing risk mitigation measures, reducing post-harvest losses and augmenting market opportunities, CII said.

“The reform process will give a boost to the food processing sector and strengthen and scale micro food processing enterprises,” Nestle chairman Suresh Narayanan said.

Some of the programmes underway include extending coverage of irrigation, improving water use efficiency and creation of infrastructure with supply chain management, the statement by CII added.

Rasna chairman Piruz Khambatta said the enhanced sourcing opportunities will be created closer to production clusters and reengineering the supply chain into a more integrated system. DCM Shriram chairman Ajay S Shriram flagged that the private sector initiatives are focused on enhancing sustainability and will enable deeper and long-term engagement between farmers and value chain participants.
