As announced by Elon Musk on Twitter in 2016, the first car to be available in India will be the Model 3 Sedan. The expected price is about INR 55-60 lakh and bookings will resume in India from next month, the first person aware of the matter told ETAuto.
In 2016 some famous Indians like Paytm founder Vijay Sekhar Sharma were among the first to book the car. The buzz then started after Indian prime minister Narendra Modi visited the Tesla plant. ETAuto sent an email to Tesla, seeking further details. It remained unanswered till the time this report was filed.
Tesla Model 3 was also pre-booked by a few other corporate stalwarts like Mahesh Murthy , Vishal Gondal of wearable and fitness technology company GOQii, and Sujayath Ali, CEO of online fashion platform Voonik, at about USD 1,000.
Tesla Model 3, the most affordable model to date, was first rolled out in 2017 and now has emerged as the world’s best selling all-electric car. It will be imported as a completely built unit with the capability of charging in 15 minutes.
According to the company’s Q3 2020 results, the Model Y and Model 3 accounted for 89% of the total Tesla vehicle sales in the third quarter of 2020.
Sources suggest that Tesla has achieved the desired numbers for Model S and Model X and the focus is to push the numbers for Model 3 and that’s how the Indian plan may help the company. Tesla reportedly has been exploring options to set up a plant in India.
The performance of Model 3 is the same story, offering 500 km of range, and a top speed of 162 mph while vrooming 0-60 mph in just 3.1 seconds.
