At a time when global majors are making a complete shift towards electrification, Mahindra & Mahindra, the maker of Scorpio and XUV sports utility vehicles, is doubling down on its future electrification strategy.

To this effect, the company has created a new structure – with a clear focus on the last mile transport solution and the first mile – personal SUV EVs. The company is focusing on its core of SUVs and may be rationalizing the hatchback and sedan EVs in the future.

The company has divided the EV business into two verticals – Last Mile Mobility and EV Tech Centre. The last mile mobility division will be headed by Mahesh Babu, whereas the EV Tech Centre division will be headed by Pankaj Sonalkar and both these CXOs will report to Rajesh Jejurikar. The detailed organization structure will evolve over the next four weeks, said an internal circular issued by the company on Wednesday signed by Jejurikar.

An internal circular viewed by the ET stated, as the group is readying itself to for a world where electric vehicles will evolve through different adoption curves with different trajectory across segment. Mahindra needs to deliver a strategy – to meet the short term needs, while preparing its the long term, stated the note signed by the ED, Rajesh Jejurikar.

It is a significant departure for M&M from its core of diesel engine to petrol and electric vehicles in line with the shift in market place.

A sizable commitment from Mahindra happens at a time when Suzuki-Toyota and Hyundai-Kia combine work on India specific solutions even as homegrown rival Tata Motors continues to bet more money and build a portfolio to keep lead.

The last mile mobility will address the first box of building efficiency, scale, for its three wheelers and quadricycles – Treo, Alpha and Atom. The products are ready, the task in front of Mahesh Babu is to leverage distribution channels, open b2b channels in domestic and export and ramp up manufacturing and manage cost. This division headed by Babu will also develop business opportunities for motors and battery packs. They will have their own sales and marketing organization, which will be carved out of a small commercial vehicle division with a specialised Last Mile Mobility dealers and committed sales and marketing organization.

This vertical will also lead external relationships; build exports with global partnerships and alliances with manufacturing – managed out of the Bengaluru plant and Chakan EV powertrain plant. The product and component development of last mile products will have dedicated team to develop newer products, with breakthrough solution, substantial upgradation, design, and interior quality and feature upgradation

The internal combustion engine derived electric SUVs are already under works with Product Development Head R Veluswamy overseeing the projects of E-KUV 100 – E-XUV 300. Post execution of these two projects, M&M will start conceptualizing newer ICE derived products based on existing Scorpio, XUV, Marazzo platforms. The born SUV electric strategy, the work on skateboard development on two platforms will be done by Detroit, with high ownership by MRV upfront on integration. The design work for born SUV EV will be done out of Europe.
